Exam A , Q 21

I think answer is not :

SELECT OrderID
FROM dbo.Orders
WHERE OrderDate > CONVERT(DATETIME, @Parameter1)

Because for @Parameter = '20080504', the function CONVERT(DATETIME, @Parameter1) give this datetime : 2008-05-04 00:00:00
Therefore the OrderDate 2008-05-04 12:00:00 is returned.

I propose this :
SELECT OrderIDe
FROM Sales.Orders
WHERE OrderDate >= DATEADD("day", 1, @Parameter1)

Just passed the exam today with a score of 1000. I studied extensively with the book. The practice exams from the book are a joke, but I knew that from the SQL Server 2008 exam. Many thanks for the dump, would never have scored so high without it.
A few questions were different. Question 2 from exam 4 does not have the correct syntax, all answers are wrong. Consult books online for the correct syntax.

@Peter - Yes, that's right. It's a standard procedure they are obligated to follow. You are left with the piece of paper, actually it's some kind of plastic foil, and a whiteboard pen. When you're done you have to hand them over to the staff in he exam center. If you prepare the exam using this dump and understanding concepts it contains, there should be no problem for you to pass. You have 140 minutes for the exam.

Hi guys,

Just scored 981 on this exam. I want to conform that this dump helped me a lot. In my opinion, if you know basics of SQL and you get to pass this dump, you will pass the exam as well.
Let me share my experience on this exam:

I had around 44 questions, on one I didn't answer correctly, I suspect it's the question 4 from Exam D, the one with 2 answers out of 6 (checkboxes), re creating a stored procedure and execute it. I still don't know what the correct answer for that is.

About 3-4 of the questions (top) had some small modifications (e.g. min date instead of max, etc.) as follows:
- Exam C, Q.10: Duplicates must NOT be retained. In this case you need to use UNION instead of UNION ALL
- Exam A, Q.28: Retain only the OLDEST Products row. In this case the answer was similar to the correct answer from the dump, only that it had MIN(creationdate) instead of MAX

One question had quite a major change. It's Q5 from Exam C. The answer from dump is A, drop UDF and use CTE. In my test there was no CTE, instead there was a new answer where there was a inner join (the correct one) however I cannot remember exactly.

Another thing to mention is that the category of questions were in a row i.e. all questions related to FOR XML hint were one after another. BTW if someone finds hard to understand the FOR XML questions, let me know, I have an easy way to get you to remember.

There were no FreeHandSQL question.

Cheers,
Mihai

Passed the exam in US with 868. This is a fairly accurate guide but read actual exam questions very carefully. Wording on some exam questions is opposite of what is asked in the brain dump. For example, dump might ask for rows older than OrderDate but exam asks for rows newer than OrderDate, or dump asks to delete all rows for a customer with OrderDate except the newest one but exam asks to keep only the row with the oldest OrderDate and delete everything else.

You need to create a query that returns a lift of products from Sales.ProductCatalog.

The answer given contains a RANK() OVER (PARTITION BY ProductCatalog.UnitPrice ORDER BY ProductCatalog.UnitPrice DESC) as PriceRank

Exam C, Q1: Minimum permissions to delete suppliers

Correct answer should be (D), the PROC *without* "EXECUTE AS .. dbo."

SQL Server will *not* check child object permissions (for DELETE on the Suppliers table, in this case) if it has the same owner as the parent object (the PurgeInactiveSuppliers). Purchases.Suppliers and the newly created Purchases.PurgeInactiveSuppliers stored procedure are in the same schema, meaning there exists an "unbroken chain of ownership" for these two objects.

The only permission necessary, then, is EXECUTE permission on the stored procedure.

Reference: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa905173 (written for SQL 2000, but still valid)

Exam D, Q4

Short answer: Like @Zico, I find the correct answers to be (A,E)

Reasoning:

Based upon their format you're looking for two answers: 1) the definition for the stored procedure, and 2) execution of the stored procedure.

Assuming the correct answer text simply did not make it into here, there are two possibilities for what the actual correct answers look like, depending upon which is available.

"Accepts a single input parameter" could be read as either:
1) "We can have only a *single* parameter, and it must be an input parameter," OR it could mean,
2) "There can be only a single *input* parameter," meaning that an additional output parameter is permitted.

If correct answers exist for both, prefer the former ("First case," below), since it more closely matches the literal question text.

The problem is that (F) uses "RETURNS @Result." "RETURN_S_" (with an "S") is used by a user-defined function to indicate its return data type, *not* for a stored procedure's return value. A stored proc would be just "RETURN @val," with no "S."

The second problem is that nothing will retrieve the value from (F). We're looking for:

DECLARE @Result INT
EXECUTE @Result = dbo.GetCustomerRating 1745

But none of the answer contain that. (B) lacks the requisite variable assignment.

(A) needs the name of its first parameter fixed (it's "@Customer" even though "@CustomerID" is used within its body), then (E) works perfectly. To retrieve an output variable from a stored procedure using T-SQL, the receiving variable must also be marked with OUTPUT. (For this reason, I guarantee that (C) is flat wrong.)

Corrections to a few of the code-writing questions (which, incidentally, I *did* have on my exam).

Note about Database Diagrams for the following: tables in the "dbo" schema show up as simply "Tablename." If they belong to another schema, it shows in parentheses after the table name. (See the image in Exam A, Q15 for an example, i.e., "Orders (SALES).")

Exam A, Q14: Create View in Sales

The *view* must be in the "Sales" schema, but the "Customers" table is in the "dbo" schema (see above). Therefore, the query should look like the following:

CREATE VIEW Sales.uv_CustomerFullName
WITH SCHEMABINDING
AS
SELECT FirstName, LastName
FROM dbo.Customers

Note the change to "dbo" on the last line.

Exam A, Q21: Stored Proc w/ casting varchar to datetime.

One of the requirements bullets states:
"The objects called in Procedure1 must be able to be resolved by all users."

Exam A, Q14 says something similar, but more explicitly:
"The view must be able to resolve all referenced objects, regardless of the user's default schema."

I interpret this to mean that it wants to include the schema name in the procedure:

SELECT Orders.OrderID
FROM dbo.Orders
WHERE Orders.OrderDate > CONVERT(datetime, @Parameter1)

(Added "dbo." to the FROM clause.)

@Chris, (A) can not be the correct answer.

The question says "column named OrderTime that stores the DATE and the TIME each order is placed".

(A) SELECT Count(*) FROM SalesOrders WHERE OrderTime = CONVERT(DATE, GETDATE())

That convert would return '2013-02-14 00:00:00' and the OrderTime of a day (lets say, today) ranges from '2013-02-14 00:00:00' to '2013-02-14 23:59:59'.

That WHERE would only returns orders from midnight, so it's not what we want!

If D is NOT missing a parameter by typo (like it was wrong intentionally), this question don't have a correct answer.

  • Feb 13, 2013

Sistem is correct. Exam B Q16 answer is wrong.
1st. The supplied answer of D. does not event pass the parser as dateadd() expects 3 params, not 2. e.g. how many days do we add???

Even with the fixed syntax, the actual plan shows 51% vs 49% for answer A, thus D. is less optimal than A.

correct answer - A.

Exam B, question
..The business team wants a report that displays the total number of orders placed on the current day. You need to write a query that will return the correct results in the most efficient manner.

I think The correct answer is

SELECT COUNT(*) FROM SalesOrders
WHERE OrderTime = CONVERT(DATE, GETDATE())

Becouse is TODAY and it is most efficently

SET Summary .WRITE (N' This is in a draft stage', 0, 0) will not append the text but rather overwrite the text.
I think the correct answer should be
SET Summary .WRITE (N' This is in a draft stage', NULL, 0) will not append the text but rather overwrite.

Exam A 'This is in a draft stage' question is supposed to be appended to the end of the nvarchar(max) column so the correct syntax should be SET SUMMARY.WRITE(N' This is in a draft stage', NULL, 0) since the append happens when the @Offset parameter is set to NULL (not zero)

Sorry, but I have to correct my comment concerning Exam A, question F17. The Group By must be C.LastName. Otherwise the query would not be valid.

But I have another correction: The Order By must be
ORDER BY MAX(O.OrderDate) DESC

  • Jan 10, 2013
  • Zico
  • Germany
  • Jan 09, 2013

In Exam A, question F19 the RANK-clause must not include "PARTITION BY ProductCatalog.UnitPrice". Otherwise the PriceRank would be always 1.

So the solution would be:
SELECT ProductCatalog.CatID, ProductCatalog.CatName, ProductCatalog.ProductID, ProductCatalog.ProdName, ProductCatalog.UnitPrice, RANK() OVER(ORDER BY ProductCatalog.UnitPrice DESC) AS PriceRank
FROM Sales.ProductCatalog
ORDER BY ProductCatalog.UnitPrice DESC

  • Jan 09, 2013

In Exam A, question F17 - I think - the GROUP BY should be
GROUP BY C.CustomerID
Otherwise all customer with the same lastname would be aggregated. So the answer would be
SELECT C.LastName, MAX(O.OrderDate) AS MostRecentOrderDate
FROM Customer AS C INNER JOIN Orders AS O
ON C.customerID = O.customerID
GROUP BY C.CustomerID
ORDER BY O.OrderDate DESC
