@Catherine & Nada
When you upload a dump it's not available for download immediately. Someone from ExamCollection.com has a look at it first for approval. It's been made available every morning on weekdays. At least, that's been my experience.

It might also cause that error, because the same file has been uploaded already, but it waiting to be approved.

@Venomous,

Thanks for the reply and information. I really appreciate that you take the time to respond. I will definately take more time to learn the material before doing the 70-642. I lucked out with the 70-640 by only taking 30 days to read the entire Self Paced Training Kit, do the labs and learn the dump before sitting the exam. Especially, when I do not work with most of the technologies that the exam was primarly based on.

Hats off to Luffy, but with a full-time job and kids, there just isn't 10 hours in my day to dedicate to certification prep.

@Catherine - Not sure what happened with the upload but, I tried uploading again and received the below erro. I will try again.

Almost forgot that I also used the following book: Cert Guide MCTS 70-642 Windows Server 2008 Network Infrastructure, by Don Poulton., in case the Self Paced Training Kit didn't explain it well for me. Don makes it easy to understand.
I took two months for learning for 70-642. I'm not as focused as Luffy I'm afraid. :-)

It's great you updated this dump with clickable links! That will help people a lot.

@Nada
Congratulations with your exam!

Now, for me studying for 70-642 basically went like this:
- watch videos (Trainsignal, maybe CBT Nuggets for extra clarification)
- go through Self Paced training kit, do the exercises in a lab(!)
- go through a dump and look up the difficult questions in Technet

Doing the labs is what makes the stuff stick in my head. I can read about it, but doing it in a lab makes the difference. It's like, if you want to learn how to ride a bike, do you just read about how to ride a bike, or do you get on the bike and give it a try?

Luffy, who scored 1000 points on 70-640 had this plan for 70-642:
"my study plan 24 * 10 hours a day
i first divide the topics into small areas, just like the one that you see on Microsoft guide for certification, and i allocate certain days on preparing for the topic, sorting according to my strengths and weakness, i put more time on my weakness.
i watch nuggets, then i do labs according to nuggets, then i read self placed and do lab according to the book, if i am want to know stuff in detail i read tech net or Google it. I use dumps just to find my weakness and work on it or do more research on technet."

Good luck!

Venomous,

I agree with your response to Earnest Ketelo. I did not put a lot of time into the dump and only read the book once and my score was not good, just enough to pass. Had I waited another week to take the test I know that I could have done better. What I can say for certain is that had I only read the first 50 questions of the dump I would have really failed because, the questions were from different areas of the dump.

I want to start prep for 70-642 and would really appreciate if you could tell me your learning and prep strategy. Also how long you usually take to prep from when you first pickup your book or start to watch videos to test day? I think that I need more time and maybe more prep material to better understand.

Look forward to your response and thanks in advance.

Thanks to all who contributed time and knowledge to the prep files. Did the English exam this week and passed. This is still valid in Latin America. The exam was 50 questions and based on that, you will need more than 35 correct to pass.

I had about four new questions some of which were similar but, with different answers and answer options but, if you learn the material you should be ok.

I uploaded a new file (Microsoft.Pass4Sures.70-640.v2013-02-15.by.Nada.452q.vce) that I used which is basically Venomous' version 2 file but, I deleted duplicate questions, combined the smaller sets in addition to making all links clickable and added references. I also added I/Q33 which is the same as I/Q13 but, different answer and answer option that I remember.

My prep strategy was to use the Self-Paced Training Kit Second Edition R2, Virtual environment, dump and lots of Internet searching. If you are new to the material or not exposed to things like AD CS, AD FS, AD RMS, AD LDS and others, I recommend you use more material.

Good luck! Going to start prep for 70-640 and hope to do exam in 40 days.

I feel that one gets from this dump what you put into it. Meaning, that if you'd take one day to go through it (or only learn the first 50 questions), you shouldn't expect to get a high score. (Unless you know everything that is required to know, of course.)

If you really learn it by heart your score will reflect that, even if this dump may not be 100% correct. There are frequent reports of people scoring over 900 points, a couple of 1000 points even. But it's a large dump, and even I forgot a few questions when I took the exam. ;-)

All the best.

Sherry,

While I understand what you are saying, here is how I see the current answer "the permissions of the Group1 group". While we need to grant the "Allowed to Authenticate" permissions FROM the resource itself (Server1), what we are actually doing is modifying "the permissions of the Group1 group" and granting the Group1 group the "Allowed to Authenticate" permission to the resource.

We are not modifying "the permissions OF the Server1 computer account" but rather modifying "the permissions OF the Group1 group" ON the Server1 computer. Like many here I am not 100% certain.

I meant, 'Allowed to Authenticate' permission, is a permission ON the server (not an attribute), (ACLs)

  • Feb 12, 2013

I agree with sherry,

The 'OF' can be a bit confusing, but you definitely don't change anything about the group, (you GRANT something TO the group by changing ACLs of a Server)

If fact, you need to change an attribute of the server (enable: Allowed to Authenticate), and then the ACLs OF/ON(means the same here) THE SERVER

So for me, permissions OF the server, IS CORRECT. (D)

  • Feb 12, 2013

  • Feb 12, 2013

Well here we go. It is called permissions on the resource. So, in my opinion, the answer is definitely D.

"Security groups. User rights can be applied to groups in Active Directory while permissions can be assigned to security groups on member servers hosting a resource. For more information, see Group types."

  • Feb 12, 2013

Venomous, if it is "selective" authentication you have to modify the settings of the resource object in order for the group/user to access the resource. You are not modifying the permissions of the group itself. You are allowing the group to access the server by modifying the object. Poorly written IMO by saying "permissions". You don't change the permissions of the Group1 group as that would have no affect. The one providing the resources has to allow Group1 to access via adding Group1 to the server, i.e. giving it permission. At least that's how I see it. You know way more than me :-)
---------------------------------------
Example:
Step 5:

Create a universal group on Microsoft.com domain and add some users who want to access resource on techpeople.com

clip_image037

Step 6:

On techpeople.com, add the above universal group into a Domain Local sales group . We can only add users from other forest only to a Domain Local security group.

Now, Users in Microsoft domain will be able to access resources in Techpeople.com.

@Gman
Regarding question B7,
In cases like this just ask yourself, "who needs to trust who?" Suppose you need access to my house. In that case I need to trust you before I let you in.

Same here. The users from labs.eu.contoso.com needs access to resources in eng.na.contoso.com. This means that eng.na.contoso.com needs to trust labs.eu.contoso.com. So, the direction of the trust goes from eng.na.contoso.com to labs.eu.contoso.com.

Your network contains two Active Directory forests named contoso.com and fabrikam.com. Each forest contains a single domain. A two-way forest trust exists between the forests. Selective authentication is enabled on the trust. Contoso.com contains a group named Group 1. Fabrikam.com contains a server named Server1. You need to ensure that users in Group1 can access resources on Server1. What should you modify?
A. The permissions of the Group1 group
B. The UPN suffixes of the contoso.com forest
C. The UPN suffixes of the fabrikam.com forest
D. The permissions of the Server1 computer account.

The answer given is A. I read the logic on this but I still think it is D because you are modifying the permissions of the server1 computer object .

Sarius,
I would say yes, you do have to study A to L. Especially, if your intension is do well on the test. Then again that depends on how well you know the material. The questions in A to L were compiled over time and from the post here there appears to be a handful of new questions which are not in this dump but not enough for concern if you learn the reasons for the answers in here. It can be very time consuming but if you allocate an hour a day and start from A in a few days you would have completed all. What I did was to keep a spreadsheet and list all of those that I get wrong on the first try and focus on those in my second attempt.

Additionally, I have deleted around 10 questions that were almost identical and in my opinion were just taking up time. Hope this helps!

Hi Everyone,
I plan on sitting this exam later this week and came across questions D39 and H7 which are exactly the same question. However, the answers are slightly different. Does anyone know if this is a typo and which would be the correct answer should the real exam have this question with both possible answers?

I'm leaning toward the answer in H7 after viewing the information in this link:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc961746.aspx

BUT then I saw this:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc785254(v=ws.10).aspx

The question is:
Your network contains an Active Directory forest. The forest contains two domains named contoso.com and woodgrovebank.com.

You have a custom attribute named Attribute1 in Active Directory. Attribute1 is associated to User objects.

You need to ensure that Attribute1 is included in the global catalog.

What should you do?

D39 has the answer as: "From the Active Directory Schema snap-in, modify the properties of the Attibute1 class schema attribute. "
H7 has the answer as: "From the Active Directory Schema snap-in, modify the properties of the Attribute1 attributeSchema object."

@sherry:
You're not raising any domain/forest there,
just preparing forest scheme and the domain to understand R2 (the new server)

  • Feb 11, 2013

  • Feb 11, 2013

I apologize if this has already been answered or is obvious and I just am not seeing it!

Your network contains a single AD domain. The domain contains 5 RODCs and 5 writable DCs. All servers run Windows Server 2008. You plan to install a new RODC that runs Windows Server 2008 R2. You need to ensure that you can add the new RODC to the domain. You want to achieve this goal by using the minimum amount of administrative effort. Which two actions should you perform? (Each correct answer presents part of the solution. Choose two).

A. At the command prompt, run adprep.exe /rodcprep
B. At the command prompt, run adprep.exe /forestprep
C. At the command prompt, run adprep.exe /domainprep
D. From Active Directory Domains and Trusts, raise the functional level of the domain
E. From Active Directory Users and Computers, pre-stage the RODC computer account.

Answers are B and C

Why? Why do both the forest and domain levels need to be raised? Shouldn't just the domain level be raised as there are still 2008 domain controllers in the forest? Why do you have to raise both?

Does anyone know if andswer 'D' to question B/Q37 is a typo? It says "domain controller Company _SRV5" but in the table it states that Company _SRV5 is a File and Print server

Company has a single domain network with Windows 2000, Windows 2003, and Windows 2008 servers. Client computers running Windows XP and Windows Vista. All domain controllers are running Windows server 2008.

You need to deploy Active Directory Rights Management System (AD RMS) to secure all documents, spreadsheets and to provide user authentication.

What do you need to configure, in order to complete the deployment of AD RMS?

A.Upgrade all client computers to Windows Vista. Install AD RMS on domain controller Company _DC1
B.Ensure that all Windows XP computers have the latest service pack and install the RMS client on all systems. Install AD RMS on domain controller Company _DC1
C.Upgrade all client computers to Windows Vista. Install AD RMS on Company _SRV5
D.Ensure that all Windows XP computers have the latest service pack and install the RMS client on all systems. Install AD RMS on domain controller Company _SRV5
E.None of the above

Domain Admins vs. Enterprise Admins
============================
Many people have asked me this question on "What is the difference between an Enterprise Admin and a Domain Admin group in an Active Directory environment?" for an example the Enterprise Admin group have complete control of the entire forest (all the domains in the forest) where as the Domain Admins have access only to their specific domain.

Hi,
I have a question about Q45 on Exam D.
I thought that you have to be member of Enterprise Administrators to change the SCP, because you change that setting in the configuration partition.

But the correct answer according to this test exam is Domain Admins, I don't understand why.
Perhaps I just interperted the question wrong.?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
QUESTION 9

Your network contains a single Active Directory domain. Active Directory Rights Management Services (AD RMS) is deployed on the network.
A user named User1 is a member of only the AD RMS Enterprise Administrators group.

You need to ensure that User1 can change the service connection point (SCP) for the AD RMS installation.

The solution must minimize the administrative rights of User1.
To which group should you add User1?

A. AD RMS Auditors
B. AD RMS Service Group
C. Domain Admins
D. Schema Admins

@ssuper2k
Regarding J12:
Ah, I understand what you're asking. Well, in a way you're right, the domain functional level cannot be lower than the forest functional level. True, but there's no "raise the functional level of the domain to Windows Server 2008 R2" action listed in the possible actions list. So we don't have to worry about that in this question. I guess they should have listed it, but they didn't.

So, that gives us:

1. Run adprep /forestprep on the schema operations master.
2. Run adprep /domainprep on the infrastructure master in each domain.
3. Upgrade all of the domain controllers in the forest to Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1).
4. Raise the functional level of the forest to Windows Server 2008 R2.

The following actions are not needed:
- "Upgrade only the domain naming master to Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1)."
That would make no sense as we need to upgrade all domain controllers to raise the forest functional level.

- "In each domain, upgrade only the primary domain controller (PDC) emulator to Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1(SP1)."
Again, that would make no sense as we need to upgrade all domain controllers to raise the forest functional level.

@venomous:
I get that you canNOT upgrade a forest to r2 with a single DC not being r2 already.
But my qs was, if you can upgrade forest to r2, without all the domains first, at r2 level, cause the answer doesn't say yo have the domains upgraded, just the DCs, and then the forest.

@Venomous, thx for the explanation! Indeed you are totally rights and too bad of the laptop :-P I thought MS maybe thought of this questions that you need to change something on the group or on the computer. Because in this example you need to change something of the computer, so I would go for the computer account.

FYI: Dump is valid in Belgium! Passed with 925 today.

@Sven
Regarding K10, I emphasized the word "of", because I had a discussion with someone about it in another thread. When you give permissions to a group, isn't that the same as changing permissions of the group? If I give you a laptop, don't I change your list of posessions? (Now don't get excited, I'm not giving you a laptop ;-) ) At least, that's how I interpret it. :-)

So when I see "modify the permissions of the Server1 computer account" I interpret it as changing the permissions of the computer account itself, not changing the permissions of Group1.

@Nada
Apart from the questions Aliyah listed, I have cleaned the dump up. I have removed the [Ruud] thing, have removed the references to original questions (as a result I had to edit one or two answers, I believe). Changed a few light things, like adding numbers to some references, deleting spaces, and the like. Don't ask me which questions, I honostly don't remember! :)

@ssuper2k
It's important to run adprep /forestprep before you run adprep /domainprep. And you cannot upgrade to domain level 2008 R2 when all your servers are running Windows Server 2008.

-Create a NS record of the DC on the DNS server, might allow replication for them, but you'd still need to add the zone there (as secondary)
-Conditional forwarder to all forest's DCs should work, though a delegation seems better.
So I'd go with C

Had this question on exam
Your network consists of an Active Directory forest that contains two domains. All servers run Windows Server 2008 R2. All domain controllers are configured as DNS Servers. You have a standard primary zone for dev. contoso.com that is stored on a member server. You need to ensure that all domain controllers can resolve names from the dev.contoso.com zone. What should you do?

A.
On the member server, create a stub zone.

B.
On the member server, create a NS record for each domain controller.

C.
On one domain controller, create a conditional forwarder. Configure the conditional forwarder to replicate to all DNS servers in the forest.

D.
On one domain controller, create a conditional forwarder. Configure the conditional forwarder to replicate to all DNS servers in the domain.

which one is it?
Think that I had it wrong

Exam J, Q12:
-------------------------------
You manage an Active Directory forest named contoso.com.

The forest contains an empty root domain named contoso.com and a child domain named child.contoso.com. All domain controllers run Windows Server 2008. The functional level of the forest is Windows Server 2008.

You need to raise the functional level of the forest to Windows Server 2008 R2. You must achieve this goal by using the minimum amount of administrative effort.

What should you do?

To answer, move the appropriate actions from the list of actions to the answer area and arrange them in the correct order.
.............................
These are the correct answers in order:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
1- Run adprep /forestprep on the schema operations master.
2- Run adprep /domainprep on the infrastructure master in each domain.
3- Upgrade all of the domain controllers in the forest to Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1).
4- Raise the functional level of the forest to Windows Server 2008 R2.
--------------------------------------------------
Now my doubts:
Isn't it required to upgrade all domain level to r2 first?
Does it matter if we first adprep /forestprep and then domainprep?

Thanks

You have a domain controller that runs Windows Server 2008 R2. The Windows Server Backup feature is installed on the domain controller.
You need to perform a non-authoritative restore of the domain controller by using an existing backup file.
What should you do?

The question states "You need to ensure that you can query the snapshot by using LDAP." The steps to achieve this would be to use Ntdsutil.exe to mount a snapshot and use dsamain.exe to export the data in order to make it available to LDAP server.
Since the question states "You mount an Active Directory snapshot" the next step before it can be available to the LDAP server is to use dsamain.exe and perform an export.
Here is a good example and explanation. Hope this helps.

I think I see the difference between 'mount' and 'expose':

*Ntdsutil* snapshot is a new operation that allows you to create, delete, list, mount, and unmount snapshots of AD DS and AD LDS data

*Dsamain* allows you to expose snapshots as LDAP servers.

--- So we guess the 'mounted' it with ntdsutil, and the database wasn't still 'exposed' as an Ldap server .??. It's the only sense I can give it ..

Hi Venomous and all who contributed to this.

I think we also need to correct H13:
-------------------------------------------------------
Your network contains an Active Directory domain. All domain controllers run Windows Server 2008 R2.

You mount an Active Directory snapshot. <<<<<-----------------------

You need to ensure that you can query the snapshot by using LDAP.

What should you do?
--------------------------------------------
Your answer is

A: Run the dsamain.exe command.

.BUT the database is ALREADY mounted, we just need to check or query
so, for me, the correct answer would be:

J: Run the dsquery.exe command.

.. I'd appreciate explanation if you don't agree.

Hoping to take this one next friday . in Spain..

@Dreamer: Thanks for the explanation, it's clear to me now.
I also have another question regarding to Exam F, Q29: Could you please explain the chosen solution, because I can't get my head around.

I understand that you need to add the delegation record in the contoso.com zone so that accounts in contoso.com also can resolve items in eu.contoso.com, but why is it necessary so that all the domain controllers in the forest host have a writable copy of _msdsc.contoso.com

Why does there need to be created an active directory-integrated zone for _msdsc.contoso.com? I thought that it was always added when you integrated DNS with AD? How come that the _msdcs is under contoso.com and not seperate like I have always seen it? How do you create this zone then?

Thanks for the explanation!

Many thanks for this dump I just passed and got 950 there were 2-3 new questions. I used Self-Paced TK, Sybex Mastering AD and CBT Nuggets.

@Sven
I think answer should be to configure GC servers in both sites. I claim that according to Sybex book there are few infos about UGMC:
"Universal group membership caching is not meant for sites with large user populations, nor is it meant to be used where applications need to access a GC server. A maximum of 500 users is supported using this caching method. Also, the cached data are updated only every eight hours. If you are planning on performing group-membership changes on a regular basis, your users may not receive those changes in a timely manner. You can reduce the time frame for updating the cache, but in doing so you will be creating more replication traffic on your WAN link. Make sure you weigh the trade-offs before you decide where you will place a GC server."

Of course we do not have info about amount of users in question but again in Sybex book there is wrote about GC that we should consider to configure GC for sites if about 100 users are authenticate per site. Another thing is when we used UGMC we do not have "high availability". And the last thing which I noticed in topic about UPN there is not any suggestions that we should use UGMC to authenticate users with UPN rather we should use GC with UPN

@Venomous: Thanks for your reply and the effort you are putting in it. I checked it here with some collegues and they told me to put a GC in the branch offices (like the answer in your dump).
But the question states there are 3 domains in which caching the universal groups would also help (like the exam prep states). If there was only 1 domain would this make a difference, because universal groups provide only an advantage when using multi domain? Interesting link: http://www.omnisecu.com/windows-2003/active-directory/what-is-universal-group-membership-caching.htm

Exam G, Q18 needs to be C. The explanation of the answer is correct, but the wrong answer is chosen for the rating.

Hi Venomous,

first of all thanks for your uploads. I am going for my first certification and this one is preparing me a lot for this. I want to learn the materials, so when I am wrong with the questions I go search for a solution.

I think I may have found 2 possible errors in this dump. Can you or someone please look over it and explain it a little bit more?

EXAM K, Q39
I think this answer would be F: Enable Universal Group Membership caching in Site2 and in Site3.
Because of the fact that in the question it states "Unreliable WAN links" and this is in fact saying that replication is a concern. Looking at page 575 in the 70-640 exam prep it states:
If every domain controller is a GC ser ver, this problem will not arise. However, if replication is a concern, and if you have, therefore, chosen not to configure a domain controller as a GC ser ver, you can facilitate successful logon by enabling universal group membership caching (UGMC).

Also: Exam K, Q10: Could some please tell me more about the given explanation? I am a little bit confused about the use of "of" could be the solution. Because the permissions of Group1 don't need to be changed, but they have to be given the permissions.

When I open the properties of the computer/user object and I select a group on wich I want to set permissions, at the bottom it states: Permissions FOR group.
So I think that MS intended that you need to change the permissions OF the computer account FOR the user group.

Hopefully someone could answer these questions and change the dump. thanks again for your efforts!

@Poseidon
Wecutil.exe is the Windows Event Collector utility that, as the name implies, runs on the computer that collects events from other computers. We would need to run wecutil on the Windows 7 computer that collects the data from the domain controllers, but not on the domain controllers themselves.

WinRM (the Windows Remote Management command-line tool) configures a computer to accept WS-Management requests from other computers. That's what we have to run on the domain controllers, as is asked in the question.

Here's some short info:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc748890.aspx

@Catherine

The way I see it is this:
Right now administrators cannot specify the litwareinc.com suffix when they create a new user using ADUC. So, to make the litwareinc.com suffix available to them we need to add it to the UPN suffixes in the forest. The only tool listed that we can use for it is Active Directory Domains and Trusts.

Try the scenario in VMWare or any other virtual environment and you'll see it works like a charm. :-)

Based on the responses to the first Venomous dump, I created Venomous_v2! Improved, better taste!

Too bad they dropped my v2 suffix.. Anyway..

So, what's new?

I (re-)corrected the following questions:
E02,11,12
F31
G37
K14,32

There are some cosmetic corrections in a few questions (J06,K02), and also a new question! (L16)

Cleaned it up a bit, and also removed references to the original answers from the FixedAnswers dump, in order to avoid confusion. You can always check the list of corrected answers on the description page in the dump.

Many thanks to Luffy, 'confused', Camel73 and Wesley for their contributions! It's much appreciated!

This will be my last upload for 70-640. Any future corrections are up to the community! :)

Good luck!
